Fulani Herdsmen: Abia Establishes Homeland Security

As the Fulani herdsmen raging menace continues its  wildfire-like spread all over Nigeria, Governor of the country's South-East  Abia State,
Okezie Ikpeazu assures he will establish a full-fledged Ministry of Homeland Security to ensure that ''no inch of Abia territory remain unpoliced''.

''The need to tie up all loose ends in terms of securing the lives and property of our people has necessitated this development'', Gov Ikpeazu who was in President Muhammadu Buhari's entourage told journalists on the sidelines  of the ECOWAS Summit on Terrorism, held in  Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Saturday.

The new Ministry,  Ikpeazu explained will have as its main focus, mainstreaming the activities of Fulani herdsmen and other  violent crimes with a view to safeguarding lives, property  and the environment.

The whole idea, the Governor stressed is to ensure that no inch of Abia territory will remain “unpoliced”, adding that field personnel of the Ministry will be trained under a collaborative effort with the Nigeria Police.

He confirmed that the present list of Commissioner-nominees before the State House Assembly includes a Commissioner-nominee for the Ministry.

theledgerng.com reports that the establishment of a Ministry of Homeland Security is a  fallout of the decision of the Governors of the South East region at their meeting some weeks ago in Enugu to set up state based outfits that will strengthen internal security

The two day summit on Security  is designed to develop more proactive approaches in the coordination of the fight against terrorism and inter community clashes. It is  sequel to a preparatory meeting held earlier in Niamey, Niger Republic and a joint meeting of Chiefs of Defence Staff,  Chiefs of Security and Intelligence Services on Counter Terrorism.

It was gathered that the main issue for discussion in Ouagadougou is the preparation of a priority action plan for the fight against terrorism

Earlier, Mr. Onyebuchi Ememanka, Chief Press Secretary has stated that  “Gov. Ikpeazu’s inclusion in the presidential delegation to the  important Summit of the leaders of the West African continent on a sensitive issue as terrorism is a clear endorsement of the deliberate and well coordinated efforts of the Governor in ensuring the safety of lives and properties of the people of Abia State.

“The Governor has consistently supported security agencies  with the donation of operational vehicles and other  equipment to help boost their combat readiness. This is in addition to several other direct and indirect interventions in the welfare of the officers and men of the various security agencies in the State.

“A master of quiet but effective diplomacy, Governor Ikpeazu has also created a solid template for inter-agency cooperation which has resulted in improved relations between communities in the state and security agencies,  a template that has reduced to its barest minimum, incidences of community clashes across the state.

The CPS further stated  that Ikpeazu’s innovative handling of relations between herders and farmers through the establishment of Conflict Resolution Committees across the Local Governments in the State has kept at bay, incidences of clashes between farmers and herders.
