Rio 2016 Qualifier: Nigeria Hockey Team Departs S/Africa, Oct 21


The Nigeria Hockey Federation (NHF) said on Saturday that the National male and female teams would leave for South Africa on Oct. 21 for the 2016 Rio Olympic qualifiers.

The competition would hold at the Randburg Stadium, Johannesburg from Oct. 23 to Nov. 1.
Augustine Balewa, Secretary of the federation said that 18 players from each the teams had been in camp in Abuja ahead of the competition.
``Our teams are ready to storm South Africa for the 2016 Olympic qualifiers in order to qualify for the Games next year in Brazil.
``Sixty players were earlier invited to camp ahead of the qualifiers. I must commend the coaches for selecting players they believe are technically sound to represent Nigeria’’.
The secretary added that Coach Tunde Odedokun would be in charge of the men's team, while the women's team would be handled by coach Baba Ndana-Abdullahi.
Balewa said he was confident that the teams would perform creditably in South Africa to ensure that the country qualified for the Olympics.
Meanwhile, 11 male and nine female teams from the continent would participant in the qualifiers.

The winners of the tournament will secure a slot each for the male and female teams to the Games
